General Discussion / Happy Labor Day!!!
« on: August 31, 2025, 04:38:34 PM »
It's been a pretty good year for us hard working American knuckleheads, so after four years of pessimism and failures, the sane and "producing" among us deserves a chance to feel good about ourselves.  So, eat, drink, reflect and enjoy!  Celebrate the progress.

General Discussion / ESS Sale 7/25/25
« on: July 26, 2025, 02:24:25 AM »
ESS has a really good sale now: $250 for a pair of the large Heil AMT and a pair of mounting kits.  A pair of mounting kits is typically $68, so this is a great bundle even if you don't need the kits.

edit: I forgot, I was looking on PE today for the Peerless woofer used in the bucket sub (backordered), and I grinned when I saw Ed's sub mentioned a few times in the reviews.

General Discussion / What a week

Losing icons Ozzy and The Hulk in one week is tough.

I once thought the big 70 threshold was really old.  Not so much anymore. Time to squeeze in some more livin' while we can still enjoy.

I'm really digging these little subs with music in a smallish room.  Yep, I couldn't resist and bought another open box unit that was in perfect shape.  It's all about cheap thrills and good sound with these things. 8)

A swarm of these would generate even more grins.

I don't have real test equipment, but today I hooked up the mighty Lepai LP-2020A+ amp (a 20w/channel) amp using only one channel to drive the little sub and a free online tone generator.  Despite the woefully inadequate amp, this sub has usable, fairly clean output at 30Hz.  The 20's were softer, but still there.  I imagine this would be much better with an appropriate amp.  I'm too lazy and old to spend time putting my "good" amps to use since that would require me to get on the floor and unhook stuff, etc.  I'm surprised that this little 4 ohm sub could make credible noise with the LP-2020A+.  I don't know what the A+ means, maybe "A" for effort?  :)

Sorry sonic, that's all I got until you send me a care pkg.  ;D

Just a heads up, there's another restocked unit for $70,  they go fast. ;)

This little sub sounds nice and nimble.  I'll try to compare it directly to the bucket sub soon.

In the upright position, its two slotted ports fire downward.  That's the way they come from PE, however; you can move the feet to transform it to be a horizontal sub where the drivers are on the top side and the slots fire sideways.  There are lots of ways to position this thing; slots firing toward the listener, or to the side or rear walls.

For $70, the quality is great.  I'm using it with a big Crown XLS crossed at 50hz or so, but any reasonable sub amp should make it sing.  I'm currently running Ed's PSTL (point source transmission lines) for the main speakers and they need very little help.  The sub does add a little grunt that is welcomed.

I'll try to post more once I can play around a little more.

edit: A picture depicting the interior (much better than me trying to describe it).

I guess the weird sub will have to wait.  It seems that Parts Exp. cancelled my order and refunded my money without explanation.  Maybe next time....

edit:  01/21/25 - I just ordered another restocked unit.  Maybe this time it'll happen.

... at least for me.  It's the mighty Dayton Audio MKSX4 Four 4" Driver Low Profile Passive Subwoofer.  Yes, it has four 4" long throw drivers that are somehow manifolded into a big square opening.  At $70 for a restocked unit, curiosity killed me.  :-[

It reminded me of one of Ed's creations that seem to defy intuition, physics, good sense, etc.  ;)  Once I get to play with it, I'll let you know what happens.

Politics / Re: 2024 Election
« on: November 12, 2024, 06:51:55 PM »
The election was affirmation that I'm not crazy (yet).  I never believed the "too close to call" mantra embraced by the media.  And, it was hours, not weeks, before the results were obvious.

The libs are in critical condition if Kamala is the best they have.  I guess they underestimated how many voters could resist the threat of being labeled racist, etc.

And, it was fun watching Kimmel cry like a little bitch.

General Discussion / Another ESS Sale this week
« on: September 21, 2023, 04:39:20 PM »
Get a pair of ESS Heil AMTs (the big ones) and mounting kits for $250.  This is a very good price if they don't destroy savings with high shipping prices.

General Discussion / Re: The 126en speaker versus the latest model
« on: September 13, 2023, 11:37:20 AM »
I haven't heard the FE126NV2.  The "NV2" is the successor of the NV.  The NV2 uses more environmentally friendly adhesives and the spec sheet is now a download to save paper.

Personally, I like good glue (the kind that deforms babies, causes cancer in mice, and makes you light-headed) and by god if I'm paying $73 for a driver, I want some paper literature.  ;D

But really, I've read that the new model offers less upper-mid distortion.  Whether that is audible is another consideration.  If it is audible, does it matter if you cross-over to a tweeter or Heil?  I guess the transition frequency matters here.

Just my 2 pesos...

Remember the all mighty bucket sub???

Parts Express has a killer open box deal on the driver.  $44.  The listing says they have 50 in stock.  If that's correct, this is a great time to buy a few to rock the house and piss off the neighbors (and spouses).  ;)

It may be eligible for the clearance additional 25% off sale starting tomorrow.  Regardless, this is really good.
