Another strange sub design...
« on: January 10, 2025, 10:42:08 PM »
... at least for me.  It's the mighty Dayton Audio MKSX4 Four 4" Driver Low Profile Passive Subwoofer.  Yes, it has four 4" long throw drivers that are somehow manifolded into a big square opening.  At $70 for a restocked unit, curiosity killed me.  :-[

It reminded me of one of Ed's creations that seem to defy intuition, physics, good sense, etc.  ;)  Once I get to play with it, I'll let you know what happens.

Since it's hard to discuss one's impressions on sound quality online, maybe some sound measurements would help to determine the quality of this sub.  But the price is good (considering the inflation these days).

I guess the weird sub will have to wait.  It seems that Parts Exp. cancelled my order and refunded my money without explanation.  Maybe next time....

edit:  01/21/25 - I just ordered another restocked unit.  Maybe this time it'll happen.

Nice to hear from some of the Members. Ive been suffering from withdrawl not seeing new posts. Can anyone recommend a good glue for the veneer on my Horns, I guess being in storage even for the short time of my move to Arkansas put the whammy on some of the sides.

This little sub sounds nice and nimble.  I'll try to compare it directly to the bucket sub soon.

In the upright position, its two slotted ports fire downward.  That's the way they come from PE, however; you can move the feet to transform it to be a horizontal sub where the drivers are on the top side and the slots fire sideways.  There are lots of ways to position this thing; slots firing toward the listener, or to the side or rear walls.

For $70, the quality is great.  I'm using it with a big Crown XLS crossed at 50hz or so, but any reasonable sub amp should make it sing.  I'm currently running Ed's PSTL (point source transmission lines) for the main speakers and they need very little help.  The sub does add a little grunt that is welcomed.

I'll try to post more once I can play around a little more.

edit: A picture depicting the interior (much better than me trying to describe it).

I don't have real test equipment, but today I hooked up the mighty Lepai LP-2020A+ amp (a 20w/channel) amp using only one channel to drive the little sub and a free online tone generator.  Despite the woefully inadequate amp, this sub has usable, fairly clean output at 30Hz.  The 20's were softer, but still there.  I imagine this would be much better with an appropriate amp.  I'm too lazy and old to spend time putting my "good" amps to use since that would require me to get on the floor and unhook stuff, etc.  I'm surprised that this little 4 ohm sub could make credible noise with the LP-2020A+.  I don't know what the A+ means, maybe "A" for effort?  :)

Sorry sonic, that's all I got until you send me a care pkg.  ;D

I'm really digging these little subs with music in a smallish room.  Yep, I couldn't resist and bought another open box unit that was in perfect shape.  It's all about cheap thrills and good sound with these things. 8)

A swarm of these would generate even more grins.
